The swimming setae of Daphnia carinata.

چکیده
I . The structure, renewal, embryonic development, and regeneration of the swimming setae of Daphnia carinata are described. 2. Each seta is formed by four giant cells, two (the core cells) forming the distal segment, and two (the sheath cells) the proximal segment. The inner ends of these cells extend back, as the seta strand, through the whole length of the rami of the antenna to be inserted into the hypodermis half-way down the protopodite. 3. The proximal segment of the seta is formed as an inverted sac, enclosing the distal segment. At ecdysis, the sac is everted. 4. The mechanics of the extrusion of the new setae at ecdysis are described. 5. In embryonic development the seta-forming cells are greatly enlarged hypodermal cells, which grow back from the tip cf the antenna to the protopodite. 6. The primary embryonic setae consist of the distal segment only of the adult seta. 7. If a ramus of the antenna is amputated, the missing segments are never regenerated. Formation of new setae takes place, however, from the hypodermal membrane which grows across to close the wound. These setae are formed in the same way as in embryonic development. 8. The muscles in the segment through which the amputation was performed degenerate and are not replaced. 9. The potentiality of enlarging and becoming a seta-forming cell is possessed throughout life by all the hypodermal cells of the two rami of the antenna, but not, apparently, by the cells of protopodite hypodermis.

The importance of calcium in improving resistance of Daphnia to Microcystis
Changing environmental calcium (Ca) and rising cyanobacterial blooms in lake habitats could strongly reduce Daphnia growth and survival. Here, we assessed the effects of maternal Ca in Daphnia on transfer of resistance to their offspring against Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7806 (M. aeruginosa). Laboratory microcosm experiments were performed to examine effects in Daphnia carinata (D. carinata) an...
متن کاملEffects of light and sound stimuli on spatial distribution and swimming activity of Daphnia under laboratory conditions
Aquatic ecosystems are heterogeneous in terms of light and sound distribution. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of environmental abiotic factors, light and sound stimuli, on Daphnia (Daphnia magna) swimming behaviour. Here, we examined behavioural changes of Daphnia (N=24) in response to light and sound treatments simultaneously. The treatments concerned a 2×2 design with br...
متن کاملMolecular characterization of the gene checkpoint homolog 1 in Daphnia carinata during different reproductive phases.
Full-length cDNA of the gene checkpoint homolog 1 (Chk1) was cloned from Daphnia carinata and designated DcarChk1. DcarChk1 cDNA was 1817 bp in length and encoded a 497-amino acid polypeptide. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that DcarChk1 was most closely related to Chk1 of Daphnia pulex, followed by homologous genes of insects. Expression of DcarChk1 was higher in adult Daphnia than in larvae, ...
متن کاملEffects of products released by Aphanizomenon Jlos-aquae and purified saxitoxin on the movements of Daphnia carinata feeding appendages
Experiments were run to determine the effect of filtrate from incubated Aphanizomenonflos-aquae on the thoracic appendage beat rate and frequency of postabdominal rejections by Daphnia carinata. Comparisons were made between the response to Aphanizomenon filtrate and to purified saxitoxin (STX). The short-term response pattern to the filtrate included an immediate 30-50% depression of thoracic ...
